Medication affordability and access were identified as top concerns in a 2022 Voice of Our Neighbors survey conducted by Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana. Community members reported that the rising cost of prescriptions forced them to skip doses, delay care, or go without treatment altogether – putting their health and stability at risk.

In response to this urgent need, the Center for Health Excellence, Quality, and Innovation (CHEQI) partnered with Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana to create the Patterson‑McCallum‑Mareta Charitable Pharmacy (PMMCP). The pharmacy was established to ensure that cost would not be a barrier to accessing essential, lifesaving medications.

PMMCP officially opened in November 2025 inside Gleaners’ south Indianapolis facility, becoming the only licensed, standalone charitable pharmacy in Central Indiana. By locating the pharmacy within a food bank that serves thousands of families each week, PMMCP was intentionally designed to meet multiple basic needs in one place.
